gweh.

“gweh.” that is maddoxese for “i don’t know.” but it’s so much more than just that. he wants to answer you, but doesn’t quite have it in his mind. he wants to say something and appear like he knows. tonight, for instance, don was helping him say nighttime prayers.

[don] “i’ll start and you say who you want to thank God for.”

[M] “ok.”

[don] “dear lord, thank you for this great night. and we thank you for…”

[M] “gweh.”

secondly and not related, cora’s new-found friends are her feet. she has played with them and sucked the toes for a couple weeks now but she loves to clap them now. no hands, see here. it is hilarious. why does she do this? gweh. like the tie-together?

two firsts

i’m sure there have been more firsts than two, but here are two good ones:

MADDOX had his first day with no nap two days ago. he just didn’t sleep. when i went in, he said “good morning. milk?”  i always heard about this from other moms and dreaded it. i do think he is getting less energy out with the boot on for his leg so maybe that was it. he stayed in his room for 2 hours though. then he slept 3 hours yesterday. go figure. he definitely needs daytime sleep. i will not even consider giving it up til at least 3 yrs old!

CORA has been enjoying real food. oatmeal is definitely preferred to green veggies but that is what she has had so far. so far, she is much messier than her bro before her – don’t always know how much gets into her and how much is everywhere else. here is her first try with the oatmeal cereal…

    rewinding

in case you missed our spring and first half of summcorasleeper, here it is. maddox is more and more talkative, funny, independant and endearing with each passing day. cora is more happy, chubby, fun and beautiful with each passing day. we hope to be more specific about that in our next post but for now, here are pics that tell the stories…

Classic Toddler Fracture of the Tibia

    pla-dough was the best diversion

in the xray room, pla-dough was the best diversion

Classic Toddler Fracture of the Tibia: that’s what they call it, folks, when your son quietly steps on a ball and twists slightly as he falls to the ground. in other words, Maddox broke his left leg yesterday, while on vacation with his Didi and Big Mo in Chattanooga. Thankfully, his full-time medical team is in Chattanooga!

The actual act was so seemingly minor that we all thought he had just bruised it or was just being a whiner about nothing. However, Didi thought something was actually wrong when he wanted to run and play but only cried when he tried to stand. She took him to (Dr.) Big Mo’s office. He examined him and ruled out a broken foot, turned ankle or strain and suggested the possible leg-break. After an afternoon and evening of tylenol and laying around, he woke up crying at 5am.

after being happy and playing with Uncle Richard, i wanted Didi to hold me

this is what it looks like when Dr. Uncle Richard tells you you have a broken leg

Didi took him to our next family member, Uncle Richard, who just happens to be a pediatric orthopaedist. how ironic, right? the xray showed the break, the “classic toddler fracture.” maddox was a good sport amidst continually wanting to walk around at the doc’s and then getting poked and prodded. he got fit into a pediatric boot right away and will be in it for at least 3 weeks. my (joy’s) brothers have both been to richard’s office many times for their sports injuries (spinal injuries and surgery, broken foot and surgery for that) but maddox’s visit was surely the earliest yet.

SO … ANYONE HAVE ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING A TWO YEAR OLD OFF HIS FEET FOR 3 WEEKS?! please bring your kids over for a diversion from his kids shows!

don caught a frog for maddox to see what he thought. you can see from the pics! as i struggled with the heebie jeebies as it hopped everywhere with no warning, he loved it. and loved him a little too much when he commenced throwing him. i think we saved ol fred before any lasting damage. if you give your kid the clippers…

ok, i did not GIVE him the clippers, but maddox grabbed them and immediately demonstrated the fact that baby nail clippers are not as harmless as i may have thought. he got his hands on them for about 2 seconds today before i grabbed them from him. we continued to play and a few seconds later, i noticed blood on many things including dripping down the window we were beside. yikes. he did not even realize he had hurt himself. he was only upset that i made him hold a wet towel on his finger to try to stop the bleeding! i can’t believe he did not cry about the cut. i mean, he cried at the doctor a few days ago when he was being weighed but did not cry at the finger prick. in fact, he was enthralled watching the blood go into the tube as they collected it. then he wailed at the shot in his arm. hm – maybe his fingers have no feeling?? well, it’s for sure that we can never assume how he’ll react next. oh – he also cried when cora screamed as she got her shots. so tender – that i too had trouble keeping it together there in the pediatrician’s office. sniff.

    go go go

maddox has so many loves of his life so he is always on the go these days. there is not enough time in each day to enjoy everything: airplanes, acorns, the swing that don “built” for him in the yard (says “thank you daddy!” every time he sees it), shooting hoops, doing his form of dancing, talking anyone’s ear off, generally making us laugh.
aunt jess took great pics of some of these activities…

    birthday boy

maddox is TWO. he had an awesome birthday despite the fact that we didn’t do a traditional one big party with friends, etc. i banked on the fact that he’d be super happy just with balloons, all the family and some hype spread over a few days and it paid off. next year, i’ll prob have to get more creative. our guy is getting amazing with how much he talks ALL the time and all the things he understands. i could write 5 posts a day with all the new things, but … i think i won’t.

    here are b’day pics!

    hi, hiney

the recent post on courtney’s blog inspired me to do this quick post on one of the many things maddox has said that makes us laugh. i guess there will be lots of these to come.

maddox has been begging for hineys. we did not know WHAT he could be talking about since we NEVER talk about hineys in this house – ha – but we have discovered it. he has many small books called “who is hiding?” and so that is what he was wanting. another thing he does very often is say HI to things – anything, animate or inanimate. for instance, i might say ” do you want to go faster?” and he’ll say “faster!” then “hi, faster!” so now we hand him his hiney he says “hi, hiney!”
